Kevin Freeney | Freeney's Graphic Design

Kevin Freeney Snr

Kevin Freeney Snr (1919-1986)

Kevin was a master signwriter, known as a ‘Gentleman of Letters’. Much has been written about Kevin and his skills are well documented.

Tom Freeney, current Managing Director of Freeney’s Graphics, remembers Kevin well. Kevin would often work with Ned, his nephew and Ned’s young son, Tom himself.

Tom recalls that Kevin was incredibly gifted, forming free flowing script text with just his imagination, paint and a pencil brush.

Kevin would arrive, set himself up and turn on his ham radio and talk to signwriters in the USA. He would later record audio tapes and send and receive tapes to and from around the world. It was social media before the term was invented.

Ned Freeney | Freeney's Graphic Design

Ned Freeney

Ned Freeney (born in 1941)

Ned, born in 1941, is the father of Freeney’s Graphics Managing Director, Tom. Ned followed in the family tradition of signwriters but with a difference. His great talent for artistic painting afforded him the opportunity to paint and reproduce full colour images, often photographic, on a large scale.

Before digital print, advertisers who wished to produce short run, full colour imagery on billboards, posters and vehicles needed to engage an artist, and Ned was the first name on every advertising agency list.

Tom recalls working with his father in the 80's and 90's painting seemingly impossible full colour ads on double decker buses. These works are recorded in the published book ‘The Art of Painting Buses’.

Tom Freeney | Freeney's Graphic Design

Tom Freeney

Tom Freeney Senior (1909-1960)

Tom Freeney was the grand father of Freeney Graphic's current M.D Tom. He was a successful commercial signwriter and encouraged his sons John, Ned and Tom into the business. Tom specialised in painted billboards and guilded gold-leaf lettering.

Tom’s work still survives today. Gold-leaf lettering on the glass door of Barnardo Furriers, College Green, Dublin is still very much intact. The lettering must be seventy years old but has stood the tests of time!
